Have you seen these gigantic pipe cleaner rose rings? Well, I thought they were to die for. I have no idea what I would do with it, I mean, it’s soooo impractical that I had to have one. Or make one. Surely I could just make one.
And I just knew that Princess Cupcake would think they were — at the very least –interesting. And worthy of deconstructing. So the search began.
I found this video on how to make them. On MARTHA, OF COURSE. But I thought I’d try to make them anyway.
You know what? They’re super easy. And super cute to boot. It’s just a lot of twisting really.
So I took a break from working and raided Princess Cupcakes’ leftover Halloween supplies and made a purple one. Took maybe 5 minutes.
All you need are 7 pipe cleaners.
That. Is. All.
Six of one color, plus a green. Whoops, and you need a finger.
Martha does a better explanation of how to do this, but here’s my version (really, the video is much better than any text version to explain it):
- Line up the pipe cleaners so they are all even.
- Find the middle and twist them together so they are attached and look like kitty whiskers.
- Bend them around the finger you want to wear it on and then twist it above the finger to close the ring shape. You are making an “O” around your finger with the kitty whiskers.
- Fan out the pipe cleaners.
- Pinch the end of each just a little.
- Roll each end into the middle of the fan.
- Once they are all rolled, twist a little and kinda poke your finger into the middle of the roll to get the petals to spread. You have to just play with this part to make it look like a flower.
- Take your green pipe cleaner and twist it around the bottom of the “petals.”
- Do the same rolling action on it to create two green petals on the bottom.
- Put on finger and wave around.
I then proceeded to take photos of it with my iPhone and send them to all my friends who also thought they were super cute. Hmmm. I was getting the tutu bug, but this took a FRACTION of the time a tutu does to manufacture. I can envision a whole Christmas tree covered in pipe cleaner flowers now…
I picked up Princess Cupcake from school and as she was slurping down her to-go cup of milk I asked,
“Mommy made a ring today. Do you want to see it?”
Silent nod. Still sucking down her milk.
I extended it to the back seat. Not moving the sippy cup from lips, but peering over the top of the lid, her small fingers stretched wide to grab the fuzzy treasure from me.
“Do you like it?”
She finally released the sippy suction, set down the Disney Princess cup with a thud and examined it more closely. Finally she said,
“I LOVE IT. I wear it?”
“Sure, baby. Would you like Mommy to make you one tonight?”
“Yes, a PINK one.”
And so we whisked off to the WalMart SuperStore for toilet paper and pipe cleaners. You know, the essentials.
I made her a pink one that night, with her assistance in picking colors and counting cleaners — but in true Princess Cupcake fashion, she stepped it up a notch asking for a pom pom in the middle. A PINK pom-pom of course.
Which I thought was a nice touch, so I hot glued a pom-pom to mine too.
And then, she asked to add the googly eyes.
And in her eyes, it was just perfect.

Gotta love it! I have to admit, the googly eyes do add the finishing touch!
I’ll wear mine to Stone Soup today to show you!
