Planning for Party – the mini series: Episode 7 – Rainbows and Rolls

Thanks for tuning in, this “mini-series” will be the daily play-by-play, panicked countdown of a mom on a mission to pull off an original and memorable birthday for my soon-to-be three year old. I’ll take you through the last week of planning, because of course, that’s the fevered crunch time. And naturally when everything goes awry…

Thursday: T minus 2 and counting

Done.

The crayon rolls are done. Hallelujah. Happy dance!

crayon rolls

It is 2:06 a.m. and my contact lenses are glued to my dry eyeballs. But I have such a relief that the crayon rolls are done that I am happy regardless.

They are not perfect. In fact, far from it. The “invisible lines” are still showing spots on many of the pockets. The lines are not straight and the corners are soft. The ribbons are sewn on backwards. But they are done. And with only about 10 hairballs and broken thread for the evening.

Also done – baking the cakes and cupcakes. (Recipe HERE)

Which was no easy task. Since the Princess Cupcake had requested the rainbow cake (hence the whole crayon theme) and it is six colored layers – with a whole orchard of various citrus fruits that had to be “zested” into it. And because I do not want to run out of cake for all the kids and parents (can you imagine?!) I also made cupcakes. Rainbow cupcakes. And not the funfetti kind. I made the same citrus sour cream cake but divided it into four bowls and colored the batter. I put it in squeeze bottles and layered the colored batter into the cupcake papers. I am really hoping they turn out okay. From the top I can see a little of the yellow layer polka-dotting through the top pink layer but I think that’s okay. It’s going to have frosting on it anyway. Speaking of tops for the cupcakes, I got cotton candy and these cute picks to dress them up. I am still twisting in my mind how to decorating a crayon cake…

Also on the accomplishments of the day: I dropped off the balloons that Princess Cupcake picked out at Target when she saw that idyllic party photo burned into my memory – that threatens and yet motivates me at the same time. Will she remember her third birthday when she grows up? And can I make it perfect like she imagines it to be?  I do find some encouragement that the effort on the crayon rolls may be worthwhile. Princess keeps talking about how the boys get spaceships and the girls get cupcakes, and where is hers? Can she have it now? And she’s been inspired, “I want to color.”

I have both pugs with me – but Beignet – she’s my scavenger is under my feet. She’s hoping that I’ll drop a layer or two of cake on the floor. It would be a fight to the finish if that happened.

Tomorrow is another day. On the agenda is NO WORK, and hats, goodie bags, centerpieces, a t-shirt, decorate the cake and cupcakes and if I am bored by 7 p.m., I will make the pretzel crayons.

That’s just about to make me pass out thinking about it all.

Stay tuned for tomorrow’s great accomplishments as the party starts to come together – despite the pug’s help.
