How to make monkey cupcakes

The Princess Cupcake started PS4 a few weeks ago, and along with getting a new teacher, a new classroom, there’s also a new room mascot. See, each of the teachers choose a mascot for their classrooms and ala Flat Stanley, the mascot spends an event-filled week with each of the students during the school year. The parents then put together scrapbook pages of the mascot’s adventure, and together with the mascot and themed-books, it’s all auctioned off at the end of the year to raise money for the school.

That’s a long explanation as to WHY the Princess Cupcake and I made monkey cupcakes for her first day of preschool. The monkey cupcakes you see below are to celebrate “Bananas” the monkey, aka Mrs. Meyer’s room mascot for the year. The monkey cupcakes have chocolate cake with banana frosting. The monkey cupcake toppers are made with Wilton fondant.

This is a great project to do with your kids. They love working with the fondant, it’s like edible playdoh for them.

Here’s how to make monkey cupcakes:

You will need –

  • Light brown fondant
  • Dark Brown Fondant
  • Yellow Fondant (or another color you prefer)
  • Mini chocolate chips
  • Black food writer
  • Nestle Mix-ins
  • Icing tip – 1″ width
  • Icing tip – 3/4″ width
  • A small fondant flower cutter – 2-1/4″ width
  • Circle fondant cutter – 1-1/2″ width
  • Rolling pin
  • Crisco
  • Wax paper
  • Cookie Sheet
  • Vanilla
  • Small paintbrush that you use for food only

Here’s how you can make your monkey cupcake toppers –

Put some Crisco down on your counter surface. I use a fondant mat, but you can use anything you like,, just be sure to wipe a thin layer of vegetable shortening on it to keep the fondant from sticking.

Roll out your dark brown fondant to about a 1/8th to ¼’t of an inch. Cut out circles with your circle fondant cutter. These are going to be the basis for the head. Put them on your wax paper on a cookie sheet so they’ll dry flat.

Next roll out your light brown fondant. Use your larger icing tip to cut out smaller circles for the monkey muzzle. You’ll also want to cut out an extra one with the small icing tip for each monkey cupcake for the ears. You’re going to cut the circle for the ears in half.

You’ll also want to cut out flowers on the light brown fondant. It’s probably easiest to cut along the edge because you only need two of the petals for the eye part of the face.

Now you can start putting the monkey cupcake toppers together.

Pour some vanilla into a small dish. Dip your paintbrush into the vanilla and paint the back of the light brown partial flower. Place the partial flower on the dark brown circle on the face. The vanilla helps the fondant to stick. Think of it like glue.

Paint put the light brown circle and place it on top of the partial flower as the muzzle.

Push a mini M&M into the muzzle towards the top for the nose.

Take your half circles from the light brown fondant and pinch the sides together to create an ear. Paint the edges and “glue” the ears to the head
Using the same technique as the ears, create a little bow for your girl monkey cupcake toppers. I put a small piece of the Nestle Mix-In’s as the center of the bow but you could use fondant or other candy as well.

After your monkey pieces are assembled, then you can take your food writer and draw in the eyes and the mouth.

Let the monkey cupcake toppers dry for a few hours.

I made a banana buttercream frosting by using taking a traditional buttercream frosting recipe and adding banana extract (I lessened the milk a little) and yellow gel food coloring.

The hubs said that it tasted like a Moonpie, but I thought the buttercream was yummy. On second thought, maybe he meant they were yummy because he’s a freak for Moonpies?

Regardless, I loved them, the Princess Cupcake loved them. They were a BIG hit at preschool and I suspect will be making another appearance before the year is through.
